Tropical reefs have the clowfish "nemo" or pretty much any character from Finding Nemo , but what would you say the mascot or figurehead of the kelp forest or temperate marine biome is? Garibaldi? Catalina Goby?

The salmon, but it's not a very good fish in the home aquarium.
Realistically, I don't think there is much of a mascot cuz people need to know what it is... only only us odd balls have this type of tank!

Fair enough. We should make one then. Let's choose a fish.

Octopus is definitely a signature invertebrate. Maybe the Catalina Goby?

Fish people. Not invertebrates. I'm for the Catalina Goby, Ornate Boxfish or maybe even the gunnel and lumpfish.

Catalina Gobies actually are. They have them on LiveAquaria and the California population knows well .
Of course the hobby itself is obscure. What could the iconic fish be.

The first thing that comes to mind for me is the Catalina Goby. I learned about it while researching "what not to buy" for my tropical nano because of its temp requirements.

Well.... since there ISN'T a really well know fish for this, let's nominate the Lumpsuckers and make a movie.
Now we just need a pixar deal lol!

It's definitely hard to compete with a face like that! But I had never heard of lumpsuckers before I started searching different forums for temperate livestock. I wouldn't say Cataline Gobies are my favorite, just the most well known. IMO, lumpsuckers have a LOT of potential to become the "mascots" of temperate aquariums. Captive bred lumpsuckers might be just what this hobby needs...

Garibaldi are so beautiful, but I have read that they are difficult to keep with other fish, so it seems like they're not really ideal for the "average temperate aquarist" (whatever that is!).
