Vortex' are like hurricanes. The source is basically colliding currents. DO NOT allow any kind of spinning motion in the currents and youll be fine. If you do get a vortex take a 3" wide spachula and stick it in the center. Then fix the flow problems >.>

Ah, but see, there's my problem. I don't know how to prevent the currents from spinning. I'd expect that a slower flow would prevent this from happening, but... I just don't know.

Well for starters try to have only one input flow. If you have more than that have them all pointing the same way so theyll break each others motion should any spinning start.
