Octopus for my Aquarium
From what i have heard octopus are mostly coldwater. I was wondering if they would do fine in a reef with anemones and gorgonians. My guess is they would. But what about the fish? I know next to nothing on octopus. I do know they are invertebrate eaters though and feeding them crabs wouldnt be a problem.

Re: Octopus for my Aquarium
Octopus will eat anything else in the tank. Period. If you want one then you really will need to get an octopus tank. One with a tight lid!
Getting the octo should be easy. Find your local pier, octopus often come up in crab traps.

Seriously, don't put it with anything you will miss. I am thinking out an octopus tank of my own too. I hope to set it up in a side tank on the same water system. Perhaps that would work for you? I would populate the tank with little things that are easy to replace. I'm sure algaes and nems, really little stuff should be ok.

Yeah, having a separate side tank might work. Or maybe, since my fuge will basically be another tank, it could go in there.

ME too. I'm pretty sure that I will branch off my system to include an octopus tank!

Re: Octopus for my Aquarium
I've been thinking about doing the same thing with my 50 gallon cube tank but I keep going back and forth that it may be to small Its 27x27x13ish, what do u guys think? To small for a single octupus? My brother said he was pulling small ones up at the docks in Newport, OR.

For a small octopus those dimensions would seem fine.AquaticEngineer wrote:Its 27x27x13ish, what do u guys think? To small for a single octupus?
I am really into this now. I'm working really hard on incorporating it into the tank.

There is a guy on nanoreef that keeps a temperate octopus tank, he has posted in several of my threads over there. You should look him up.

I believe you're talking about "C-Rad." He's actually a member over here but posts very infrequently. I really like his tank though.

Not as of now. I am working on a design in the tank where possibly I could seal off a section with a piece of glass and just have holes in it for circulation between both sides. Of course, it might be easier to do something like a nautilus.

Re: Octopus for my Aquarium
I think that a I might do a 20 gal next to the main tank. I can have an overflow feed the "OCTOgon" (as I am calling it). Then the OCTOgon with have a return pump to either the main thank or the trickle filter. The least amount of parts. Now all I need is a octopus! lol I want to make remake my
PVC overflow anyway. I made it with 3/4 in tubing because it would interface well with the 1" vinyl line I had. I much more flow so I can open up my pump and REALLY start moving water!
The 3/4" in sounds great for running into the 20gal (or what ever).

Re: Octopus for my Aquarium
Sounds plausible. My problem is I want more then just an Octopus in my tank. A short list would be something along the lines of...
2 Catalina Gobies
1-2 Navanax
1 Gunnel
3 Sculpins
1 Ornate Boxfish

Just because it would eat everything . Which is my dilemma.

The Navanax might be ok.
But if you want an octopus you need an octo tank. Perhaps sea stars?

Maybe. Unfortunately I think I'll just have to seal part of the tank off, with only small holes to allow for circulation.

Quite a challenge there PF. I think I have an idea on how/if you can do it without seals but I will def have to put more thought into it.
