What should I buy??? I got some money burning a hole in my pocket Empty What should I buy??? I got some money burning a hole in my pocket

Post by AquaticEngineer September 18th 2010, 2:23 am

So I sold off some stuff from my old hobby, airsoft.

I should be getting about $800 pretty soon for my rifle and was wondering what I should buy with it?

I'll be able to finish the LED lighting for the big tank, get a dosing pump and finish my auto feeding system, going to pickup an ozonator hopefully, and maybe even get the second tank up and running Happy Dance

I know I could easily blow this money on stuff for my tropical reef, but really, who wants to waste money on a tropical reef when u can waste it on a temperate reef right?

Any suggestions? I gotta spend it before my wife makes me buy a new dining room table Mad

Get on craigslist and look for someone liquidating a reef with a chiller Wink People hate to move those things and the end of the month is coming!

Post a link to your local Craig's list and we call all look at what is posted too Smile

Both my tanks have chillers built into them already, but I think your right on the craigslist idea. Pretty much everything I've gotten for my temperate tanks has come from CL, I guess I'll just have to be patient and keep and eye out for the good stuff Smile

I've been looking at getting a bubble magus doser pump for my auto feeder and maybe a red sea ozonator to hook into the skimmer.

I guess I should probably get the plumbing finished for the sump on the smaller tank and get a skimmer for it too.

Its so easy to think of things you want to do or buy when u dont have the money are just day dreaming. But when u actually get a little extra money you really want to make sure and get the right things and dont blow it all on something stupid Laughing

and a fluval fx5 which he can give to me (or a EHIME pro) lol. Invest towards a good skimmer or a great canister filter or a bigger tank.

I might say an excellent canister filter and protein skimmer are essential in temperate aquaria.

Is there any advantage to a canister filter compared to a HOB filter in a temperate tank?

Well I picked up a Red sea wave maker unit for $35 bucks locally, so now I'm looking for some decent Koralia Type powerheads to plug into it. The addition of the powerheads will be mostly so there is flow in the tank when the auto feeder comes on, since the main pump will turn off at that time so the food put into the tank is circulated for a while without being immediately filtered out of the water.

I dont need a lot of flow for the tank since it already has quit a bit, so I've been thinking about the Koralia Evolution Nano 425 mostly because it is the smallest size and would be less noticeable. Dont know how many I want to run in the tank though. And I'm still skeptical of running open pump inlet powerheads in a tank that is predominately anemones.

Also, the price vs the size vs the GPH is another concern. I can get 3 of the koralia nanos shipped for about $78 on ebay.

Or I can get 2 knock off versions of the koralias that claim to push out 3200gph and are a dual pump so it'd be like have 4 koralias in the tank for around $50 shipped. HERE's a LINK to the PUMPS on EBAY Down side to these is the larger size, and I'm not sure if they would just be overkill in a 4 ft tank.

Heres' a pic of the 3200 GPH pump on ebay
Thoughts?

I thought I would let you guys know how un-awesome this was..........the money that was burning a hole in my pocket had to be spent on new tires for my wifes car.

Weak.

Anyways, I've figured out what I will be puting my money towards in the future. It will be for a 3/4 thick 24x24x24 acrylic cube tank with a customized overflow area so I can have a seamlessly plumbed coldwater display tank inside my house. The design and idea was inspired by my trip to see Steve Weast's tank.
