Hello from Vancouver, Canada!
Hi there!
I'm new to your forum, glad to be here. One of your users invited me here following a thread on another forum about my failed 20g temperate tank (80% planned failure, but all the same). Summer hit, no chiller... Holly $@%^ was that nasty to clean out! lol... P.U. But not to be discouraged I LOVE temperate tanks and I like the idea that I can collect my own materials.
So.... I'm in the market for a big tank and to give it all another go. My plan is to find a bigger tank and get it up and cycling, then I'll worry about lights and flow and rocks, etc, etc.
Good to talk to you all!
Michael

Hi Micheal
I am starting to plan my own temperate tank - after keeping tropical reefs for the last four years - so I am a little behind your failure
This seems to be the only site so far for these tanks - I joined today or yesterday
nice to hear from you

Welcome!!!
What part of Vancouver are you in? I vacationed up there years ago and LOVE LOV LOVE the aquarium there. My friends where not so happy that I spent 20+ minutes on every exhibit staring and pointing things out. LOL, we were up there for a car show and they took time to go to the aquarium just for me
Let us know what you get when you go collecting, there is a lot of nice life up there maybe we could work out some trades

I live Downtown. I've been to the aquarium MANY times. And as I'm sure you will agree, their "WEST COAST" exibit is a temperate marine dream land. I love the giant 2 story tank filled with rockfish, salmon, sturgeons, etc. big big fish!
Oh... and I'm actually walking distance from my collection sight.

The abundant free livestock is one major reason I began looking into this branch of the hobby. It was also an excuse to root around in the muck as I did when I was 10!
Then where do you people get your animals? I know that many can't collect their own livestock. Roadtrips? Nobody sells this stuff, do they? I REALLY like the seastars... but everyone here calls them starfish!

Re: Hello from Vancouver, Canada!
hey hows it going? Glad my invitation worked. The forum is still small but you will learn a lot from it.
You need to take some pics of your collection spot. I would love to see it.

Sure thing. It's actually a park RIGHT next to the Port of Vancouver. I can snap the photos and flip over some rocks for y'all. Unfortunately collecting will have to wait. Perhaps I can find another couple of those 14" gunnels!
Gunnels are GREAT aquarium fish, and I don't care what anyone says. And my skillet fish was cool too. With a hook and line I can collect all kinds of stuff too. Flounders. Surf perch. Pricklebacks. Mmmm sole. Greenlings. I have fished this same park many times. Ultimately I would like to keep a Spiny Dogfish, but I've never caught a small one! hehehe

Pictures are a necessity! Gunnels are great fish. I hear they are in comparison to Puffers as far as personality.

Re: Hello from Vancouver, Canada!
I would host them on a photo sharing site like photobucket and then link the pictures.

Re: Hello from Vancouver, Canada!
Ok...
So it was a REALLY nice day, so I decided to HAD to do a little fish and that I could snap some picks for you all.
Unfortunately for you folks it was a very high tide, so not a lot of critters to show, but in time you will get to see plenty. But first I need a tank! lol
Here is a picture as I walk over the rail overpass to the park.
Here is near the water.
Oh!!! It's getting late.
Here is the only life I saw.... and "Ocher Seastar" I hooked in the "back" with my bait.
