Biosphere-4

Well, I decided to do something ive been wanting to do for a long time. A biosphere is a completely enclosed ecosystem. The hole thing is sealed, top, bottom, sides, and back. the goal is to create a self sustaining "world". It is possible by having comsumers, decomposers, and herbivores. By completing all necessary cycles including the water cycle, nitrogen cycle, O2-CO2 respiration cycle, carbon cycle, food chain, and nutrient export cycle. By calculating correct humidity and air pressure. And making sure that the creatures inside the tank WILL breed. Because if not everything fails. All this is done very easily with a simple little setup with wroms and a plant but not a whole diverse ecosystem like im tackling. It will be 25% land and 75% freshwater. With the land mostly stocked by moss and insects and the water stocked with simple animals like bugs and maybe a few ghost shrimp. This whole project is essentially basicly its own little planet without any outside interference excep for the laws of gravity and the theory of waves. My prediction is that in the beginning some things will die out until there is an O2-CO2 equilibrium. Basically if some algae doesnt have enough CO2 then some of it will start to die off until it has enough and it goes the same way with the animals except with O2. this project will be called Biosphere-4 because Biospgere-1 is Earth, #2 is a failed project attempted by a bunch of scientists except they wanted to be able to live in it to, and #3 is a succesfull project performed by the Soviet Union.

Iv been wanting to do something like this. I never seen any examples of anyone even attempting anything more complex than some moss & a few worms so it was kind of disheartening. If you have any good places to read up on it can you drop me a link?

they have a product called ecosphere. i bought one. Its a saltwater one with some shrimp and algae but that is just plain to simple. The one Im making is much more complex. Ill keep yall updated.

As for reading. There is not much on it so you kind of have to figure it out on your own. I basicly research everything needed for life on Earth to exist and that gives you an idea of what you need.

Wouldn't you still need filtration and lighting..?

filter-no light-yes. the organisms act as a biological filter.

Really? That's awesome! I think if the biotope idea works for you I might give it a try.

However i think they have a balance figure out with the shrimp and all. You might need a really big sphere.

hmmm...I have just sparked an idea...I think it will be amazing

wait what? well the ecosphere with the shrimps really has no equilibrium in all of them. When I bought mine there were tons of ecospheres but every single one of them had a differant amount of shrimp, algae, and rocks. So my theory still stands here as even though they all had differant amounts in them they all were still succesfull. because they balanced them selves out.
I am gonna start the experiment today The top is gonna have ridges so that it can basicly rain.

little bumps so that the evaporation can driop down on the whole tank.

What plants you got?

wild ones Im not sure of their name but I do know that they dont get to big, and lots of moss, I beleive its star moss.

You should have went with grass. Grass grows in dirt without a lot of nutrients and actually generates nitrogen witch is the key macro nutrient for vegitative growth.
