What Kind of Anemones can be Found in Newfoundland?

Post by Brent on September 26th 2009, 1:16 pm

Just wondering. I know a place that has a 12/13 meter long by 6/7 meter wide tide pool just under a cliff, and I know a way to get down and up. It has a huge load of fish and Anemones and what looked like corals of some sort, though I could be wrong. I know of another big tide pool as well in Keels that is very shallow and full (and I mean FULL) of invertibrates and macroalgea. The tide pools at the beach just down the road are fairly hard to get to but contain a wide variety of molluscs, crustaceans and starfish as well as shrimp (the kind that you buy to eat).

anyways, the main point is for the first one I stated. It has anemones but I'd like to know what kind so I could research them before collecting them.

Pictures are almost always essential to IDing and animal. What are the dominant colors of the anemones your talking about?

From my memory of about a month ago, I saw red, yellow, pink and light-grey as well as what looked like polyps. I'll try and go back there before it freezes over to get pictures.

Nope. All seperates.

They remind me of Acropora Corals, but I am positive they are anemones.

I also saw something like a pole with upside-down brown, white and clear palm tree leaves.

Probably. I'm guessing sub-species of them.

Thanks very much!

Depends, really. The starfish around here vary greatly across the spectrum, but the crabs, shrimp and lobster are all really the same colour with different tints. We do have "Sea Lice" as well that are pretty colourful most of the time. I have seen the occasional oddball though, like, for example, a blue crab I saw years ago, and a green shrimp.

Yeah. Down in SoCal you have to watch where you go. Generally stay about a beach or two away from the preserves and your good. Just make it look like your a tourist Razz.
