I discovered this morning that 2 of my big bellied mini spotted pipe fish have released their young and I have 1/4 inch tiny pipe fish fry smimming around my Tank ..

wish I could share a photo but I need macro lense to capture and a still subject..

Any idea's on how to feed these little critters as NSW is hard for me to get as my lakes are still very muddy atm .

Ive been feeding my pipes shrimp eggs and 1 day old brine shrimp ,but these are still way to big for the fry..

edit more info...spotted pipe fish (Stigmatopora argus )

If they are too small to take even baby brine shrimp or baby copepods, I would suggest obtaining rotifers if you want the fry to survive. Be sure to mix some mysis shrimp into the diet of the adult pipefish as well.

If you can get em down there tigroprius californicus is a great little super easy to breed critter to feed to newly hatched fry.

If you cant get em down there, let me know. I breed em in garage and can harvest more from the coast line here any time I want. I would be more than happy to ship you some. They seem to tolerate temperature changes and salinity changes very well, although the shipping may be more than its worth.

Check for these guys in the upper splash zone above the high tide line next time you are at the coast down there, you may find some Very Happy

The sump is probably the place for them to be right now. They might get eaten in the main tank and they have a better chance of finding food in the sump. Good luck with the collection!

Not good...I have not spotted the last baby for awhile ..Sad

I am making sure that the sump is going to be a safer spot in future ,Im putting a finer mesh grid on the over flow between DSB/refuge and the bio section/filter and ive taken all the shrimp out ..

I may collect a few more adults with eggs on my next collecting day .

That's disappointing. Sad

The sump will probably be the safest place for the fry to grow. How many pipefish do you already have?

Oh no! That is so unfortunate! Perhaps you should try to move the fry to a quarantine!

I have 5 adult in the DT They seem to be happy enough Ive been feeding them brine shrimp fry and stocking the tank with macro shrimp with eggs ,Ive also mixed eggs and brine shrimp in to my blended ice cube feeding blocks as they seem to get excited when the block melts and move around alot..Ive figured my adults have at most six months life span so I would like to get more pipes with eggs soon and try to raise the young to adults 12-14 months

Australian spotted pipe fish Stigmatopora Argus ..aka Peacock pipefish.

Maybe they will reproduce on their own if conditions continue to remain favorable. Good luck! Hopefully next time will be a success. Smile

Well I have discovered the reason the little fry go missing...Anemones ,even the small match head sized ones I have in the sump on the live rock can eat a fry pipe in minutes..

So I have to set up another safe area in my new sump design for the mothers and fry.. Lucky I havnt started cutting the glass yetPipe fish is a daddy/mommy 489166

Ahh good to know.

With the number of pipefish I have now and the number of corynactis I have, I should probably find a safe place for any potential broods.

Ah. Well it's good to know the reason for their disappearance.
