LUMPFISH FOR SALE ON GULF OF MAINE
Still to spendy for me, but kinda cool. I'd rather spend the $35 on gas and go look for one myself

Re: Lumpfish for Sale!!
Are you confusing this with our local Pacific Spiny Lumpsuckers which are either yellow, red, or green....and reach a maximum of 1". I'm not sure we even have this larger cousin in our waters.

Here's a distribution map for this species.....Cyclopterus lumpus...Kinda cool looking, gets a bit larger than the local ones. I google imaged it and there are a ton of pics.

Re: Lumpfish for Sale!!
OK....there's no doubt it's a cool fish....but, at 6 inches, it's a tough fit for most temperate tanks these days. At least you wouldn't have to worry about it getting eaten by small anemones.....like our smaller version (which is the reason I have not yet actively sought them out ). The best time to collect our version is rapidly approaching though....late Fall.

Waders might work....but, actually snorkeling would be better. You could borrow a drysuit from someone and float above the eel grass beds. No pouncing will be necessary......they mostly just sit on the eel grass blades. They are hard to spot.....so, you'll need to hover above the beds and look carefully.

I saw that site too, but I guess I'd like to focus on keeping North American Pacific species, maybe even just species native to California. A Spiny Pacific Lumpsucker would be great, but from what I have read, they seem to stay in deep water here in Southern California, presumably because it's cooler.

Re: Lumpfish for Sale!!
I've been looking in the PDX craigslist most of the day and it looks like they are out of my price range for now I'll probably just pick up a nice set of chest waders for the time being since I'm just tidepool collecting for the most part. Also, I'm 6'5 so finding a used drysuit will be tough I think.

Re: Lumpfish for Sale!!
Well I'd like to snorkel a bit or have the option to fully submerge, but I think I'll take it slow for now until I can afford to take the plunge into dive lessons and gear

Snorkeling wouldn't be so bad. What is the average depth of the water you're thinking about going in?

The Baltic Sea lumpsucker male grows only ~3" long, max 4"
It's really pretty bright red in the mating season when we get a lot of them with fishing nets.
