Oh, I was thinking 1-2 inches... 8 inches is really small for an eel though!

Ya most of the ones I find are about 4 inches long. The big ones have developed spines haha

Jacob, those are probably gunnels/pricklebacks, not eels. Gunnels and pricklebacks look like eels, but they aren't related. The clue? Gunnels have rays in their fins, eels do not. In fact, eels don't have spines anywhere on their bodies, if my understanding is correct.

Cool, I do know I have caught eels though, they bite at out paddles, they are morays.
That would make sense, but some have spines some don't, whats up with that?

There's a video on youtube of a Moray biting someone's thumb off... It's disturbing.

Yeah i have seen that from TPF. He ended up replacing it with one of his toes. Not very smart to tempt them like he did.

Agreed. Moral of the story: Don't be stupid around eels. Especially ones with teeth,

Re: Eels and Eel Like Species
Jacob - as far as I know, there are no morays that range that far north. Could they have been wolf eels?
When I was at dive camp this summer a kid was bit by a moray. He was really annoying, so it was okay , it didn't do much damage.

Re: Eels and Eel Like Species
oh, and as far as spines - not sure, may be something involving maturity, or maybe sexual dimorphism.

Wolf eel is the more likely of the two.
