Well what people dont realize is that dirt is one of the best natural insulators around. I do have a thought on that though. Its easier to show than explain so give me a few minutes. But yea something like a hood. Basically have a square the size of the tank and room (the collective 30'x30') thats 1' tall and basically sit it on top of everything. Sure it would take up an extra foot space so either dig another foot down or let it stick out if you build it below ground. Of course all this glass is going to be super thick for the roof as well as the walls themselves.

Okay here we go. Basically alternating concrete and sand (Sand is denser than dirt) every 1'. Now 5' out should be enough but it can always be extended.

Awesome!

I'm no expert, so I don't understand the ins and outs of this sort of thing, but would you not lose heat to the ground rather than sustain it?

Thats why you layer it. Youll reach a mid point where somewhere in your insulation the tempature of the tank and the temp of the dirt meet and cant push the other back either way. Man...When I get started on the rocks though...Thats going to take DAYS...

So I added a 6" sand bed and decided to play around with adding a rock. If for nothing else I can use it as a model.

I thought it was the reverse. Now I'm all for your idea! Find some way to deal with the outer walls though.

Hahaha me too. But from shock and not knowing what to do. I'd walk upstairs as if it never happened, then walk back downstairs and freak!

I like the idea you have for the rock wall. For the other sides I would just include arches and a couple of pillars.

Well incase anyones forgot I wanted to shoot for self contained. My thought was that to get that we would need open areas off the main reef for things like phyto/zoo plankton to breed unimpeeded.

Anyway heres a pic of my idea for the supports on the outside walls. Basically you would fill the 5 chambers with concrete.
