Who has done their research on LED lighting

Post by AquaticEngineer on August 4th 2010, 6:20 pm

Just wondering what research everyone has done into LED lighting for temperate tanks?

My larger tank will be all Non-Photosynthetic animals so intensity and spectrum is not too much of an issue. It will only have lights on it when I'm looking at it.

My other tank which is 27"x27"x13", I will be keeping macro algae in and I was wondering what spectrum would be preferable for tidepool collected macros? I have been looking at the 90w UFO LED fixtures on ebay for this tank.

Well, I can tell you one thing: Vancouver is cloudy far more than it isn't. Sad

Well I have doen a LOT of research on LED and was thining about putting a patent on my LED fixtures. But I dont have that kind of money. We took the PAR levels of T5 and compared them to LED PAR levels. The LED had more PAR than any light I have ever tested. As far as temperate tanks. Temperature is no problem because LEDs are very cool, but temperate macros need almost as much light as some soft corals. My advice is to either spend some money and build a light using crees. Which would be about $200 depending on tank size. OR, build a light using some high power 5mm or 10mm LEDs. If you do that order them from ledsupply. and make sure they have an mcd of 5,000 plus.

edit: 2 of those UFO fixtures from ebay should suffice.
