This is going to be ran with the bioballs completely submerged, that's why I added the stand pipe on the drain. The open end is where I'll put either a sock filter or a filter pad with a tray. I still need to add another bulkhead fitting some where on the sump so I can loop in a protein skimmer.

I'm only using the bioballs as a way to get more surface area for bacteria in this system. On my large tank I use bioballs in a more traditional wet dry setup. Just make sure there is a good physical form of filtration in front of the bioballs so you dont get a build up of decaying waste food on them.

Re: Coleman Cooler....the Ultimate Temperate Sump?????
I got mine from one of my neighbors, he went to a local fabric store and got a couple yards of some kind of felt with no dye. Ran it in the washer a couple times with water only and made up a bunch of his own filter socks with that. They work pretty awesome I'm going to do the same to lay in the tray on my trickle plates. I'll let you know if I find the stuff at Jo-Ann Fabric, but I'm sure someone on ReefCentral or PNWMAS would know right away what its called.

Re: Coleman Cooler....the Ultimate Temperate Sump?????
Well the cooler sump is almost finished and in action : ) I think I am going to change out one of 3/4 inch bulkheads I'm using to a 1 inch but other than that I just need to do a final leak check.
I put cleaner looking paint job on it also and finished the area for the filter pad. Picked up another big box of bioballs for free today as well so I should have more than enough now.
