South West of the UK Empty South West of the UK

Post by JonAlresfordUK July 13th 2010, 11:45 am

here is our families favourite get away in Cornwall in the South West.

South West of the UK P7210110

There are plenty of different anemones - beadlet, strawberry etc
South West of the UK P7200010
These anemones are reasonably large and really nice
South West of the UK P9260210
South West of the UK P9260211

We will be going down there soon and I will be getting some more photos and update this thread. We also have shores which are much nearer by are largely unknown territory so hopefully I will be looking at these areas which may throw up some surprises

Another habitat which is tidal estuary is the end of Southend Pier
loads of invertebrates underneath there so I would fancy going out there to have a look to see what is there - starfish, anemones and we found a sea mouse or hare (nudibranch)

This actually reminded me of a question I've been meaning to ask.

Does anyone know what the legality of shipping non native marine life into areas across the globe where they may survive in wild if released? I know the dept of fish and wildlife here has regs on lots of other animals that could be invasive.

I would love to know. I know a guy in Washington who was going to send me some Puget Sound stuff. The only thing stopping me setting up another temperate reef is that I cant get livestock. My understandingis that you can ship the items but youa re not supposed to sell them.

That's what my understanding is also. Collection law in Oregon for inverts that are not commercially collected is 10 per person per day for personal use only. I guess if my personal use is to ship them to Louisiana for the cost of shipping and no profit then we are good to go, right? Wink

Hi Rambo

The anemone is actually a Strawberry Anemone Actinia fragacea it is restricted to the English Channel and it is a stonking animal.

I am still working out how you would stand in collecting a few anemones for a home study aquarium plus some fish and other animals. I have a book on foraging and it highlights the different laws, bylaws and other factors relating to collecting animals and plants to eat - the same applies to marine organisms - though it would be for keeping at home and of course these animals can be returned while the food collection would leave the lifestock well dead

So I need to be careful - beadlet anemones are very common and so a few being kept in a aquarium I would suspect would not be a problem - I am not planning to sell anything - as collecting for sale is often illegal

Very nice!

I think that collecting your own livestock adds SO, SO much to the hobby. You get to pretend you a naturalist seeking specimens. Or just a big kid.... like there is a difference! lol

As for selling what you collect... big no, no everywhere I can think of. It might be possible if you look into it, but as is always the case, "the man" is going to want his cut and that would mean business licences, permits, and of course, taxes.

But for people like you and me, there are so many countless billions of these creatures lining the shore that there aren't even regulations about it that I know of. (here anyway). Really, kids take buckets and buckets of invertebrates home for fun every summer.

Really, I have a fishing licence and it says that anything that is not listed has a limit of 20 per day. More than enough.

I have a fishing liscense to. Its a lifetime. But you ahve to get all kinds of stuff to sell marine life. We can still trade though. But you cannot make any profit. What is the smallest size seafood tank they make?

The smallest that marineland makes is like the smaller tank I have, its about 50 gallons. The version I got is designed to be used as a shellfish display tank not as a permanent holding tank, so it lacks the filtration that the larger tanks have.

Keep an eye on craigslist in your area and you'll find one. I'm sure the market down there will be saturated with them soon enough if BP keeps up the way they are.

I shot an email to the Marine Dept of Fish and Wildlife for Oregon today to see if I could clrify what the legality of selling / trading / and shipping inverts that you collect here is.

Cool, I will probably find one. I tries to buy oysters yesterday at a seafood restaurant. They said they couldnt get them anymore. Mad Seafood markets are dropping like flies over here. I should be able to find a nice little setup.
